World of Warcraft - Item Upgrade
The upgrade of items allows players to raise the item level of armor and weapons that can be equipped. This boosts the effectiveness of the gear, as well as sometimes adding buffs or rerolling an affix.
It is important to keep in mind that upgrading common gear is not always worth it. Rare and Unique gear will quickly outclass modernized magic and common equipment.
Cost

Item upgrades can be expensive, particularly when it is related to armor and weapons. Based on the upgrade path you choose, each item level increase will cost Valorstones or Crests. The costs can be prohibitive for players who do not have the funds, or are unwilling to grind.
